Installing the APIC Software
Download Powerpoint Instructions
There are 3 individual installations to complete when initially installing APIC:
- APIC Engine/Aviation Data (APICNorthAmericaInstall.exe)
- Terrain Data (WestTerrainInstall.exe)
- Geographical Data (NorthAmericaGeoData.exe)
All three must be installed for APIC to function correctly. The Terrain Data and Geographical Data only need to be installed once because this data doesn't change. The APIC Engine/Aviation Data should be reinstalled every 56 days to ensure the latest software features and current aviation data.
Install these data packages before installing Approach Plates.
Installing APIC Approach Plates
Download Powerpoint Instructions1) If you are installing the APIC Approach Plates from a CD, Insert Approach Plate CD, and it will automatically launch the Approach Plate Manager. If you downloaded the plates using an email link you need to manually run the file ManageDTPP.exe, which will also launch the Approach Plates Manager.
2 ) Once running the Approach Plate Manager Select the plates you wish to install and then click copy.
3) To verify that the Approach Plates have installed correctly you can check in the Plates directory:
C:Program filesApproachApicDataUnited StatesPlates
In this directory there should be a folder for each state named with the two letter abbreviation of that state (NY, WA, CA, etc). Make sure that these state folders have the Approach Plates for that state in them. If not you will need to reinstall the plates.
*You can also copy the files manually from the CD or downloaded files directly to the above mentioned directory.
Installation Troubleshooting
1)
Vista Installation Permission Error
When installing APIC on a Windows Vista device, you get an error saying:

This means that you have a installation permission error and you need to change the administrator installation privileges.
To Fix:
Open your User Accounts Menu, and go to the User Account Control selection menu. You need to deactivate the User Account Control, making sure the box is unchecked as seen in the image below.

2) On a PDA, APIC shows strange symbols or very small fonts appear in some of the screens (Nearest Airports, Satellite Connection...etc.)
This means that there is some foreign font that has been installed on your PDA at some point by another software program. APIC is using this font to display some of the text in the program
To resolve this problem:
Locate the foreign font in: My Device\Windows\Fonts. Open the folder and delete any fonts inside. APIC should run normally after this.
3) PDA Memory Issue
If you are running the APIC Approach Plates on a PDA and when you open an Approach Plate, and nothing shows up, you may need to free up more memory on your device by copying files saved in the main memory to a storage card. If there is not enough memory free memory to display the Approach Plate, APIC will display an empty screen.
4) On a PDA, when I enable items in the Geographical Data or Aviation Data Menu, APIC crashes and will no longer open.
Typically this means that you have loaded too many data files into the main memory of your PDA. APIC will try and reload these files each time you start APIC, but with insufficient memory is will crash upon initialization.
To resolve this problem:
a) To get APIC to start again you can delete the file:
Program Files\APIC\Data\APICStoredData.txt
This will return APIC to it's default settings, and it will be able to start because it wont load all the data into memory upon initialization.
b) Free Up Memory as much memory as possible on your PDA. Put all the data that you can onto an SD of CF card to free up as much of the memory on your PDA to run APIC. This includes putting APIC and all associated data onto the storage card.
c) Don't turn on too many of the Aviation Data and Geographical data databases at the same time. This will cause APIC to run slower and possibly crash if your PDA memory is too limited.
